GES To Phase Out Employment Of Teachers With Diploma Cert By 2022

The Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in-charge of Managerial Services, Anthony Boateng, has disclosed that the employment of teachers with diploma certificates in the country will be phased out from the system as part of ongoing reforms in the education sector.

Speaking to some selected journalists in the 16 regions across the country during a GES Secondary Education Improvement Project workshop via zoom at Larteh Akuapem in the Eastern Region, the Deputy Director-General said although it would be difficult to do away with non-trained teachers from the system, the ongoing reforms would ensure that current teacher trainees were graduated with degree whilst those who already had acquired diploma certificates would be given an opportunity to upgrade themselves.

He, however, added that teachers who failed to upgrade themselves would not be sacked but taken off the system with time. Mr Boateng also hinted that, as part of the ongoing reforms, the GES would no longer be responsible for private schools.

“The GES is the regulator of education at the pre-tertiary level and is supposed to ensure that all schools perform to standard. After the reforms, the GES will focus more on implementing policies and programmes and will no longer be responsible for private schools,” he stated.
