Garu brutalities: We’ll stage a demo at the National Security office if Kan-Dapaah keeps snubbing parliament – Prof Azumah

The Kussaug Peoples Congress is bailed to storm the premises of the National Security should the Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah fails to appear before parliament over the recent military brutalities of some residents of Garu and Bugri in the Upper East Region.

Professor John Azumah, the president of the Kusaug People Congress says they are disappointed at the attitude of the National Security minister for snubbing the Parliament of Ghana after he was summoned by the speaker to appear and answer questions over the military brutalization of over 200 citizens in Garu and Bugri for allegedly attacking a V8 landcruiser belonging to the NationalSecurityoutfit.

He noted that the Kusaug People Congress shall mobilised all citizens living in and around Accra to embark on a massive demonstration at the National Security ministry to demand justice for the citizens who were brutalized by the military.

Most victims lost their property, sight, memory, limbs and arms. A young man died as a result of the brutality.

“we will organized all Kusasis living in Accra to stage a demonstration if the National Security Minister fails to appear in parliament again on Monday November 13, 2023”.

The National Security Minister, Ken Dapaah was scheduled to appear on the floor of parliament on Thursday November 9 ,2023. But, he failed to appear before the House.

The Buem member of parliament, Kofi Adams asked a question on the floor of parliament regarding when the National security minister will appear before the lawmakers to answer questions on the military brutality in Garu and Bugri.

Responding to the question by the Buem member of parliament, the deputy majority leader Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin explained that leadership of the house intervened for the release of the Eight brutalized young men who were airlifted to Accra and remanded by court. This he explained has ended the matter and that the National Security Minister does not need to appear before the house.

“Leadership asked me to engage the National Security Minister, and I came to report the outcome of the engagement, which led to the National Security Ministry releasing the gentlemen who were in custody. I must explain here that at the time I was sent here, the court had remanded them for two weeks. Upon all considerations, National Security, through its prosecutor, applied for rescission of the said order, upon which the court granted. And the same day, the government ensured that all those gentlemen were sent to Garu and handed over to the families. So Mr. Speaker, that matter has been settled. The National Security did what was supposed to be done, and followed due process. So Mr. Speaker, that matter is closed,” he said.

His explanation did not go down well with some groups including the Kussaug Peoples Congress.

Its president expressed disappointment over the Deputy majority leader’s explanations. Prof. Azumah told Word News that the matter can not be closed when justice has not been served.
