Akolbila Blessings, a camboo driver aged about 30, from the Duligo community (a suburb of Bolgatanga East District) in the Upper East Region, has allegedly been beaten to death.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, in the evening after the young man failed to meet his daily sales target and was unable to pay his sales debt of Gh¢1,500 owed to the camboo owner, Mr. Nsopika Atuah, popularly known as “Apika.”According to Mr. Aduko Apognire, a member of the deceased’s family, Mr. Nsopika Atuah organized three people Avalumdiba Akontoge-Kolgo, Nicholas Awankimbila, and Ayimbotima Anandua to beat Akolbila Blessings to death.
Mr. Apognire explained that even during the beating, one resident of the Duligo community pleaded with the suspects to stop. The resident offered to support them with Gh¢800 to help clear the Gh¢1,500 debt. However, the suspects refused the offer.
Mr. Apognire added that when the pleading resident insisted they stop, the suspects claimed they were taking the deceased to the nearest health facility. Instead, they allegedly took him to a location in the community referred to as the valley and continued beating him until he died.
He further alleged that the suspects later sneakily took the corpse to the deceased’s room/bedroom in the early hours of Thursday (around 3:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.), left the body there, and then fled.When the family realized that Blessings’ body had been left lifeless, they reportedly went to the Bolgatanga East District Police Station to report the incident. The police later took the body to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital mortuary for preservation.
Speaking exclusively to Word News, the deceased’s grandmother, Mrs. Anongobono Atera, said she saw her grandson on the same day (Wednesday) and asked why he had not gone to work.She stated that Blessings told her they were yet to resolve the issue particularly why Mr. Nsopika Atuah had not handed over the camboo to him.
She explained that Blessings didn’t returned home on Tuesday night and went to his uncle house , she said his room came out holding money, which he gave to Nsopika Atuah some days earlier, but the owner reportedly rejected the amount.
Mrs. Atera added that when the camboo owner and the other people came to the house to call her grandson out, she pleaded with them.
However, she said Nsopika Atuah did not listen.She claimed that Mr. Nsopika Atuah and the other three people told her they would return and inform her of what happened, but she did not hear from them. She was unaware that they had beaten Blessings to death.
She said she woke up to prepare a warm water drink, called Blessings several times, and Blessings brother reportedly answered that he was sleeping.
When she tried to wake him again, he did not respond. She touched his body and noticed it had become too cold. She then removed the cloth covering his face and saw blood on his mouth. She immediately called on his father to come and see what had happened.
When Word News contacted DSP Bless Pomador, the Bolgatanga East District Police Commander, he confirmed that the killing of Akolbila Blessings has been reported to his office.
DSP Pomador called on residents of the Duligo community and the entire Bolgatanga East District to remain calm, assuring them that police are currently investigating the case and the four suspects at large will be brought to book.
