The Assembly Member for the Winkogo Electoral Area in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region, Hon. Edward Azuah Akolgo has presented five desktop computers and 300 story books to five Junior High Schools (JHS) within the electoral area to improve on quality education.
The beneficiary schools include; the Winkogo JHS, the Awaradone JHS, Christ The King, Dapoore and the Goriko JHSs.
Presenting the items, Hon. Akolgo said it came as a surprise to him that teachers in the beneficiary schools taught Information Communication and Technology (ICT) without a single computer.
Speaking exclusively to word news , he bemoaned the situation saying “It is sad to know that these schools were without a computer and our kids are learning ICT as a subject.”
He said even though the computers were not sufficient for the entire population of the schools, the gesture would at least improve on teaching and learning of ICT across the schools.
“These learning resources will go a long way to help boost teaching and learning in the schools,” the Honorable Assembly Member said.
He urged management of the schools to ensure the items, especially the computers were put to good use to achieve their intended purpose.
He said it was his desire to see all basic schools in the area well equipped with ICT laboratories to whip up the desire and interest in the study of ICT.
He appealed to government through the District Assembly to complete an abandoned ICT project which was started by the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama’s administration to further boost ICT studies in the District.
Hon. Akolgo said the story books were also meant to inculcate the habit of reading in pupils in the area to improve their vocabulary and command of the English Language, and advised pupils in the District to take their studies seriously so that they could become responsible citizens in the future.
Receiving the items on behalf of the beneficiary schools, Madam Elizabeth Akudjato Headmistress of the Winkogo JHS expressed gratitude to the Assembly Member for the gesture.
Mrs Fati Lukeman, headmistress of Dapoore also used the opportunity to appeal to the District Assembly, philanthropists, Non-Governmental Organizations and stakeholders in education to immediately intervene to ensure her school was connected to the national electricity grid so that they could derive the desired benefits of the computers.
