
The family of Professor Thomas Mba Akabzaa has officially announced his passing, which occurred on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre after a short illness.
The late Professor Akabzaa was recently appointed as the board chairman of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). He was a distinguished academic, policy advisor, and public servant, making significant contributions to Ghana’s development, particularly in natural resource governance, energy policy, and public sector administration in the Bongo area of the Upper East Region of Ghana.
Previously, Prof. Akabzaa served as Chief Director at the Ministry of Energy and was widely respected for his intellect, integrity, and lifelong dedication to national service. He supported many youth in the Upper East Region in realizing their dreams.
In a statement released by Mr. Prosper Anaba, spokesperson for the Akabzaa family, it was indicated that funeral arrangements and details of the memorial service will be communicated in due course.

The Akabzaa family officially announced with deep sorrow, the passing of our beloved
father, husband, brother and uncle, Professor Thomas Mba Akabzaa, which occurred
on Thursday, 17th April 2025, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).
The Late Professor Akabzaa was recently appointed as the Board Chairman of the
Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
Professor Akabzaa was also a distinguished academic, policy advisor, and public servant
who made significant contributions to Ghana’s development, particularly in natural
resource governance, energy policy, and public sector administration.
He previously served as chief director at the Ministry of Energy and was widely
respected for his intellect, integrity, and lifelong dedication to national service.
