Peace Network Embark On Peaceful Gesture

The ‘Isi and Payaasi network’ of natives from Doba in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region who trace their lineage to Kandiga have painted the Doba Chief’s Palace as a sign of peace after several years of conflict between the two communities.

The move by the peace network, was initiated by the Sirigu Women’s Organisation for Pottery and Art (SWOPA) with sponsorship by the Canadian Fund for local Initiatives.

Mrs Bridget Adongo, the Managing Director of the SWOPA, noted that there were inter-marriages between indigence of the two communities with children, and said the initiative was part of a road map to end the conflict between Doba and Kandiga.
She said similar exercises were undertaken at Palaces at Kandiga, Sirigu and Mirigu.

Mrs Adongo said the initiative would not end after the Palaces were painted, but indicated that the sons and daughters from the communities would continue to work to ensure lasting peace, and advocated the need for them to co-exist peacefully for development.

Some women of the network told WORDNEWS that the network was long overdue, saying it would educate the younger generations to know their roots and put an end to the conflict.

“I am a women leader in Doba. I am highly impressed with the initiative taken by the Sirigu Women’s Organisation for Pottery and Art. I can see that peace between natives of Doba and Kandiga now. Though it is not fully recovered, it is better than before, and we are grateful to SWOPA,” Mrs Cecilia Anyewine said.

She advised the youth of the two communities to embrace peace as a lot of human resources and properties were destroyed.

Mr Raymond Aitibasa, a Lecturer at the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) in Navrongo, also admonished the peace network to work in the spirit of unity to ensure long lasting peace across communities, especially Doba and Kandiga.
