UE/R:Winkogo Primary School Old Students renovate dilapidated school block


 
Old students of the Winkogo Central Primary school have refurbished the dilapidated school block. Built in 1955, the school has not seen any renovation.

The 67-year-old structure, first to be built in Winkogo used to be the only educational structure for the entire community and several surrounding communities in the then Bolgatanga District.
 
Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, the Secretary to the committee of Old students who doubles as the assemblyman  for the Winkogo electoral area, Hon. Akolgo Azuah Edward lamented how the school nearly collapsed due to how weak it has become, thus exposing the school to rain storm , leaking roof leading to lower enrolment.
 
“our alma-mater which has today seen a facelift from contributions initiated by the old students’ association.  we can all remember the deplorable state of the school some few years back and as a  result of this, children were seen removed from this school to other schools by their parents and guardians not only on non-performance, but the state then. Teachers were also not happy because the environment was not safe for effective teaching and learning”.

Hon. Edward Azuah noted that in order to salvage this deplorable situation since Government alone could not address it, old students of this school prudently created a common platform to solicit for support and as well, ideas which attracted members far and near, suggestions were made for a formation of an interim executive to work towards attainment of the collective decision, proposal were tabled  before the management of GES in 2019 and the proposal was given the needed support. In the same year 2019, we started the project from our little contributions and here we are today.
However, Hon Edward Azuah noted that the contributing made in 2019 has seen  the School block  been entirely refurbished, the donation also saw one hundred and fifty (150 ) metal mono- furniture, six(6) set of table and chair to teachers to enhance teaching and learning in the school.
 
                                   The old students have connected electricity to the school to boost teaching of ICT and other teaching and learning that require electric power,  as well as changing of all the doors and windows to metal. They also provided all the six classrooms with marker boards.

Hon. Edward Azuah noted that the cost of the entire project stood at a little over GHc.62,000.00 excluding non- cash donations.
28 packs of Aluzinc roofing sheet and 100 bags of cement were also donated to us for the works. We equally carried out serious communal labour as a community to reach this far.
 
He pleaded with
 the Talensi District assembly to complete the abandoned ICT and library projects in the community to facilitate the learning of the Information Communication and Technology Centre project in Winkogo which was started by the former John Dramani Mahama reign in 2016 and has been abandoned since 2017 till date.

The district director of education for Talensi, Christiana Azure Ayinzoya commended the old students for their kind gesture and pledged to put the six classrooms into effective use and to work hand in hand to uplift the image of the school.
The headmistress of Winkogo Central Primary, Rev. Pwatirah Goldia Wemoyie told word news  that the renovation of the school has restored the lost enrolment in the past years.
She also thanked the old students for their timely intervention.
