UE/R: First Case of Monkeypox Recorded at The Regional Hospital.

The Upper East Regional hospital has recorded its first case of Monkeypox , close sources have disclosed.

Our sources at the hospital disclosed that the victim, who is now diseased, is a military officer, was brought to the hospital on Saturday 23rd July, 2022 and was admitted at the emergency department of the hospital for treatment. The soldier however was defeated by the virus and died on Tuesday, 26th July, 2022.

A staff at the facility who spoke to this reporter on condition of anonymity said” Yes the region has recorded one case of monkeypox at the regional hospital. The victim is a male military man. He was brought to the hospital on Saturday and was admitted at the emergency unit but he unfortunately died on Tuesday, 26th July, 2022.”

Another senior staff who the reporter spoke to, confirmed the case but directed that the PRO be contacted for official statement on the case.

“Yes it’s true we have recorded one case of monkeypox but I’m not in the position to officially speak on it. Contact the Regional PRO, for the official response”

The Upper East Regional Health Director, Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsie confirmed the case in a telephone interview with Mr. Simon Agana and promised to give full update of the fatality at a press briefing to be organised next week.

“we have confirmed one case of monkeypox but unfortunately we lost him, but we are preparing a media brief to share with all the media.”

The Director General of the Ghana Health Service on Monday 25th July, 2022 at a press conference, disclosed that a total of 34 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in six regions; Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Eastern, Accra and Upper West regions.

Before this case in the Upper East Region, the country had not recorded any fatality among the cases recorded.
