Exemplary Prison Officer Promoted Posthumously.

The President of the Republic, H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has awarded the late Senior Chief Officer (SCO), Albert Henry Lutterodt a posthumous promotion to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Prisons.

According to H. E. Nana Akufo-Addo, the late Senior Chief Officer was promoted in recognition of his exceptional dedication to duty and selflessness, exhibited on June 18 when in his attempt to rescue a family of 3 from flood waters at Ankaful, got drowned in a rather sad twist of events.

The President, who was the Guest of Honour for the graduation parade of cadet course Intake 29, made this known when he commissioned the participants of Officer Cadet Course Intake 29 into the senior officer corps of the Ghana Prisons Service and promoted them to the rank of Assistant superintendent of Prisons. The graduation parade of the 198 officers comprising of 127 men and 71 women took place last Wednesday, at the Prison Officers Training School, at Roman Ridge, in Accra.

H. E. Nana Akufo-Addo commended the Director-General of Prisons and the entire staff of the service for their determination in ensuring safe custody and reformation of persons committed into their care, adding that the Ghana Prisons Service has been one of the best managed prison systems in Africa.

He also applauded the Church of Pentecost for supporting the Service with 5 prisons with the aim of embarking on large scale agriculture and skills training, and pledged his government’s continuous partnership with the private sector to help decongest the prisons.


“Government’s commitment to enhance adequately the Human Resource capacity of the Prisons Service has led to the expansion of its manpower base with the recruitment of some 3,700 of recruits and the enlistment 550 officer cadets in the last 4 years”, he stated.


“In as much the Prisons Service is working hard to reform prisoners into becoming law abiding citizens, the larger society must be prepared and take responsibility to welcome and work with ex-prisoners, so that they do not become re-offenders’, H. E. Nana Akufo-Addo advised.

Awards were presented to deserving graduands by the President. Senior Under Officer Homey Matthew Amegbor received the Sword of Honour, as the Overall Best Cadet Officer, Junior Under Officer (JUO) Paul Acheampong received the Academic Cane as the best in Academics and JUO Philip Opoku Prempeh received the Commandant’s Award as the best behaved officer cadet.
