The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) has trained 22 selected journalists on Sexual and Reproductive Health in the Upper East Region. Made up of 12 females and 10 males, the journalists were taken through Sexual and Reproductive rights, genda equality among others.
One of the topmost role of FAWE Ghana is to empower girls and women through gender-responsive education. They believe that through education of women and girls, livelihoods are improved for entire community and civic education where liberties are enhanced. FAWE is currently been run in two municipalities and two districts in the Upper East region. Builsa North municipality, Kassena Nankana municipality, Bongo district and the Kassena Nankana west districts.
The three-day training which was held at Zuarungu was moderated by a season journalist and a media consultant, Mr. Kwesi Ghartey-Tagoe. He took the journalists through Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights, Gender Equality, and Harmful Traditional Practices in Ghana. with funding support from its Global Affairs Canada, the training also touched on issues which guide journalists on how to write stories and reports affecting girls and women in our societies.
He entreated journalists to move to communities to look for information regarding teenage pregnancy, reproductive health, human rights abuse and avoid over relying on researchers whose data might not be inaccurate.
National Coordinator of FAWE-GH, Richard Amoani indicated that the training became necessary because FAWE Ghana, Right to play realized that the four districts have issues related to sexual reproductive health.
The training, he noted will enable journalists to report accurately on sexual reproductive health and
Gender equality.
“We want to engage the media practitioners, because we want to ensure that this message on sexual reproductive health is carried out by the media people because they engage, talk and educate people through their medium and so without them this advocacy and this campaign will not be successful. we expect the media to ensure that whichever messages they are sharing with this young ones are age appropriate and this information are very accurate to ensure that the go behind and asked their friends about things there do not have information about”
