The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bolgatanga East and Minister of State at the Attorney General’s Department, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine , has cut the sod for the construction of a new police station for the Bolgatanga East District a former capital of the Upper Region.
The project, according to Dr. Ayine, will be executed by MATRIX PED Constitution Limited, with the sod-cutting ceremony held on 13th April 2026.Dr. Ayine said the district capital, Zuarungu, is growing rapidly, yet the police station there remains very old and does not reflect the status of a district police command.
He noted that the building is outdated, with rooms that are too small to accommodate officers posted to the area.“It is a very old building with rooms that are very small and cannot accommodate the officers posted here to perform their duties. You will notice that the officers mostly hang outside their building,” he stated.The Attorney General further explained that policies affecting police operations must ensure officers have the basic necessities of life, including access to essential services that support effective duty performance.He added that while considerations for correctional facilities and accommodation of individuals have their challenges, **basic facilities such as bathrooms and water closets (WCs) are non-negotiable.
Dr. Ayine said the initiative is a cooperative effort between himself and the police service, adding that he is not imposing anything on the police rather, the goal is to modernize and improve conditions for service delivery in Bolgatanga East.He disclosed that although he studied and later understood the need for better police infrastructure, the project would not be funded through the local government ministry or the usual government channels.Instead, Dr. Ayine said he paid for the design work by architects and structural engineers and began raising funds himself.He explained that the Minister of Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, advised him that the Interior Ministry’s budget could not support such a project.
As a result, Dr. Ayine decided to raise funding independently.He also revealed that his personal friends and business associates donated generously toward the construction of the police station.Dr. Ayine said the new facility will include a full complement of offices** as well as residential accommodation for officers.
He added that once police officers are posted to Bolgatanga East, they will have places to live and work comfortably, instead of being compelled to move outside the police station due to lack of accommodation and facilities.
The Regional Police Commander, DCOP John Ferguson Dzineku, expressed gratitude and excitement about the project, describing it as an ultra-modern, state-of-the-art facility.He indicated that when completed, the facility will enhance policing operations and bring the police closer to the people through strengthened community-police collaboration..
Speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, the Police Administration, and the Regional Command, DCOP Dzineku thanked the Attorney General for prioritizing the safety and security of the people.He expressed hope that the project will be completed within the stated timeline, adding that the police are eager to move into the facility and deliver improved services to the public.
DCOP Dzineku made an appeal to other leaders in the region to emulate the initiative by building similar facilities, particularly in Binduri and Tempane
