The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in the Upper East Region of Ghana, Mr. Roland Atanga Ayoo, has commissioned two kindergarten (KG) blocks at a total cost of Gh¢1,532,672.4.
The two beneficiary communities are Yorogo Gaabisi and Aperiga Dorogo in the Bolgatanga Municipalitycommunities that previously lacked basic school facilities. Children in Yorogo Gaabisi were forced to sit under trees to learn, while parents in Aperiga Dorogo faced the challenge of their children walking long distances to access education.
Due to these challenges, the municipality used the Common Fund to construct new ultra-modern kindergarten facilities in the two communities to improve access to early childhood education.
Speaking at the commissioning, Mr. Ayoo stated that the KG level is particularly important because children begin to develop key skills including cognitive, social, emotional, and communication skills that prepare them for successful progression through the basic education system.He added that it is therefore essential for children to be provided with safe, appropriate, and stimulating learning environments from the beginning of their educational journey.
The MCE explained that commissioning these educational facilities represents an investment in the future of the children of Yorogo Gaabisi and Aperiga Dorogo, and by extension, the future of the Bolgatanga Municipality.According to him, the provision of the two-unit KG blocks, including office, store, and sanitary facilities, will significantly improve the learning environment for young children.
He noted that the inclusion of the 4-seater KVIP and two-unit urinal in the communities is particularly important, as access to adequate sanitation is an essential part of quality education. Children, he said, must learn in an environment where their health, dignity, and safety are protected.
Mr. Ayoo further stated that the new infrastructure will also provide teachers with a more conducive environment to carry out their duties. It will help address challenges related to inadequate classroom space and create a more comfortable setting for teaching and learning.
He encouraged parents and guardians to take a keen interest in their children’s education. He emphasized that their responsibility does not end with enrolling children in school; they must also monitor attendance, support learning, and collaborate with teachers to address challenges that may arise.
He stressed that while infrastructure alone cannot guarantee quality education, it must be complemented by qualified and motivated teachers, teaching and learning materials, effective supervision, parental involvement, and supportive community involvement.
An Assembly Member for Yorogo Tingre, Mr. Bawa Atule, expressed gratitude to the government for responding to the pressing educational needs of the people of Yorogo Gaabisi, especially the situation where children were learning under trees.
Also, Mr. Atugra Richmond, Assembly Member for the Dorogo electoral area, thanked the government for constructing the kindergarten block with associated facilities to support smooth school operations and improve access to education for children in Aperiga Dorogo.
He noted that the community has long complained about the lack of a kindergarten school, adding that the area is surrounded by small streams which prevent KG-age children from crossing to attend school.
He said that if the community takes good care of the facility, it can compare favorably with some private schools.
However, he appealed to government to support the community with a primary school so that children can progress from KG two to the primary level.
Mrs. Theresa Akudaa Atidabila also expressed gratitude to the government for the kindergarten block in the community. She, however, appealed for government to construct a CHPS Compound to enable residents to access quality healthcare.
