Binduri: Presiding Member Hospitalized After DCE Nominee’s Rejection

Mr Samuel Azure presiding Member of the Binduri District Assembly.

Mr. Samuel Azure, the presiding member for the Binduri District Assembly in the Upper East Region of Ghana, has been hospitalized at the Bawku West District Referral Health Centre. This follows a violent incident where supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) attacked him after the assembly failed to approve the President’s nominee for District Chief Executive (DCE).

Mr. Azure explained that since the nominee, Martin Ariku, did not receive the required 50% of votes, the President has the option to re-nominate him or appoint a new candidate. Ariku received 8 votes out of 17, amounting to 47%, while 9 assembly members voted against him, translating to 52.9%. This resulted in what some are calling a “technical knockout” in the assembly.

The outcome enraged NDC supporters, who accused Mr. Azure of orchestrating the nominee’s rejection. The presiding member, who chaired the confirmation process, sustained multiple injuries in the attack and was admitted to the Zebilla District Referral Centre. Although he is responding to treatment, he has not yet been discharged.

Mr. Azure remains hopeful for a resolution, awaiting further instructions from the President regarding the nomination process.
