We Will improve the Free SHS Programme – John Mahama

The Former President, John Dramani Mahama says the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will work to improve the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy and abolish the double-track system.

He said there was no  uniformity in the current education  system which he described as a “traffic light system” where some students would go to school for two months and vacate for their colleagues at home to also go.

He said the next NDC government would ensure all  students were in school for three to four months, instead of the three to four  weeks they stayed in school.

“When the NDC was in power, our children all went to school together and when they vacate they all come home together, and that is what we are  going to do, we are going to repair the Free SHS programme and make it better,” he said.

The Former President is on a two-day campaign tour of the Upper East Region to solicit votes from Party delegates as the NDC gears up for its Presidential and Parliamentary primary elections slated for May 13.

According to the Former President, the Free SHS programme posed financial burden on parents as they spent more as compared to the pre Free SHS period under the NDC government.

“I can tell you that the money we are spending on our children to go to school is far more than the money used to pay school fees, when the children go to school, you will be surprised in four weeks they are back,” he said.

He said owing to the double-track system, the students spent less time in school and were compelled to vacate for the next track.

All Constituency Chairpersons of the Party promised a 100 per cent endorsement for the Former President to overwhelmingly propel him to victory to lead the Party as Flag bearer in the 2024 general elections.

He entreated all Parliamentary aspirants and Party delegates to ensure peaceful elections during and after the primaries.
