Pre-Tertiary Teacher Unions Declare Strike Over Appointment of New D-G of GES.

The three Pre-tertiary teacher Unions of education has withdrawn their service effective today, 4th November, 2022 over the appointment of a new Director General of the Ghana Education Service.

The teacher unions, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-GH) on 28th October, 2022 gave the government a one week ultimatum to reverse the appointment of the new Director General, Dr. Eric Nkansah, who they described as not qualified for the post, for industrial harmony in the service.

The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations in a press release on 3rd November, 2022, invited the group to a meeting to avert a possible strike action after the expiration of the ultimatum.

The three Pre-tertiary teacher Unions have however followed through with their threat and have withdrawn their service effective Friday 4th November, 2022.

Teacher Unions strike…….

Call to Action

We have been compelled under the current circumstances to publicly communicate to Ghanaians on our intention to go on strike having reached the November 4 deadline we gave government. Consequently, we have decided to embark on strike from today, Friday, November 4, 2022. By this, we are informing the general public that we are withdrawing our services in all the pre-tertiary education institutions.

Thank you.

ANGEL CARBONU, PRESIDENT, NAGRAT

KING ALI AWUDU, PRESIDENT, CCT-GH

DATED: 4TH NOVEMBER, 2022

The unions have questioned government’s decision to appoint a banker to the highest office of the service when the same service rejected teachers with similar certificates for promotion.

“It is unacceptable for a banker to be appointed as a Director-General of the Ghana Education Service instead of an educationist at the same time when many teachers who did the same courses and related ones were rejected by GES because it is not related to education.”

“We stated that both the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service should apologize to teachers for accepting the very qualifications they rejected when teachers presented them…We have been compelled under the current circumstances to publicly communicate to Ghanaians on our intention to go on strike, having reached the November 4 deadline we gave the government. Consequently, we have decided to embark on strike from today, Friday, November 4, 2022. By this, we are informing the general public that we are withdrawing all our services in all the pre-tertiary institutions,”

The leadership of the three unions have vowed not to call off their strike until their demands are addressed
