Bongo: NPP boils over Assembly Members’ Appointment

Some disgruntled members of the New Patriotic Party in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region went on rampage over the revocation of the appointments of some assembly members. The district Chief Executive for Bongo, Hon. Rita Atanga revoked their membership prior to the commencement of a voting exercise to elect a district presiding member.

“I will like to say a word before,  we know that even though the assembly is run not on party basis, but we all know that we all have different parties among us, so this goes to my party where I belong there will be some changes of appointees and am sincerely apologized for  the later information giving out to them at this hour sincerely, so by the power vested in me by his excellency the president of Ghana and through the regional minister, the following people are they newly appointed members of the district assembly and they are Hon Alegsike Isaac , Assibi Awuni,James Abeanaba , Bismark Adabore , Abolga Samuel , Samuel Akurugu , Peter Atanga Adabore , Karim Akolgo Nsoh Joachim Ayariga , John A Atibila  ,Clement Nba , Clement Apikiya Naba Azaare Anyenaba and Alupanga Timothy Baba. These are the newly appointees of the NPP to honorable house”.

The disgruntled members of NPP took over the Bongo district courtroom, halted the process of swearing-in the new members and the holding of election of the presiding member.

The situation compeled the party elders, regional executives and some security officers to hold close-door meeting to resolve the chaotic situation.

The newly appointed members were however sworn-in under strict security protection while the disgruntled members who wanted to enter the courtroom and disrupt the process were met with police resistance with some of them assaulted.

Mr Kwame Amoah, one of the disgruntled members was arrested by the police and handcuffed on the allegations that he has removed an electrical fuse thus causing power outtage.

Kwame Amoah was later granted bail.
The Assembly however could not proceed with the election after hours due to the brouhaha surrounding the termination of the appointments of some appointees.

Speaking exclusively to Jonathan Asaanabugre, the constituency youth organizer, he claimed that the district Chief Executive Hon. Rita Atanga did not consult the constituency executives before appointing the new assembly members.

He also alleged that the DCE has appointed her family members whom she shares same polling station. But responding to the allegations, Hon. Rita Atanga debunked the allegations and said  those she appointed were  party members and not her family  members .
