Standby For Possible Action on the Request For COLA- Four Teacher Unions To Its Members

Four Pre-tertiary teacher Unions have asked its members to be on standby for a possible action on government’s failure to honour their request for the payment of Cost Of Living Allowance (COLA).

The four pre-tertiary teacher Union, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Teacher and Education Workers Union (TEWU), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) in a joint statement on Friday, 1st July, 2022, said it will address the public on developments in the Pre-Tertiary education sector on Tuesday, 5th July, 2022.

“This is to inform our members that the three Pre-tertiary Unions in education, namely, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Teacher and Education Workers Union (TEWU), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) will hold a joint press conference on Tuesday, 5th July,2022 to inform the Ghanaian public in developments in the pre-tertiary education sector. “

The group said their action has become necessary due to government’s failure to meet them or honour their request

“This has become necessary due to the government’s feet dragging on the request for the payment of a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) to public sector workers”

The teacher Unions have in the last two weeks intensified calls for government to pay a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) to its members and public sector workers to cushion them over the persistent hikes in the price of commodities or they will lay down their tools.

If the teacher unions carry on with their threat of a possible strike, it will hit the education sector very hard as the education sector is now recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic which forced government to close schools for about a year.

The Senior High School students will not also be spared. Some of the schools are currently writing mock exams in preparation to the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination which commences from August 2022. The students may be denied the last minute preparation and guidance from their teachers for the exams.
