UER: Baapelug Basic Schools cry for help to end Running Shift System

Children of Baapelug Junior High and Primary Schools in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region are crying for support to end the long abolished shift system used to accommodate the students population in the area. Unlike other basic schools who have about seven hours contact hours Baapelug Junior school and primary spend not less than three to four hour’s in a day and that’s if it does rains. This follows a rainstorm that ripped off the Junior School and affected part of the primary school in May 2020 , forcing class four to Six pupil occupying the three classes whiles class one to three sits under trees for teaching and learning.

Attempts to get the Talensi District Assembly to fixed the situation has yielded any fruitful result as a visit to the two schools showed that the furniture for the Junior High Schools were under the mercy of the bad weather with some of the wood used for roofing looking bend whiles some of woods are left hanging. Portion of the primary school block had also not been fixed as some parts of the block had developed deep cracks which demands a new block. Speaking to some of the final year students who are currently preparing for BECE, they indicated the situation is unbearable and could affect the outcome of their result because they are going write same exams with their colleagues who enough contact hours with their teachers .

Suhutuat Faustina a final year student of Baapelug Junior school said “our school got ripped off since last year 2020 and its is affecting our learning so much ,we have not been learning effectively as compared to our colleagues, when you look at the whole Ghana its only Baapelug Junior High and primary that is running shifts Education and this has been thought for so long ,so when we come to school in the afternoon we cannot get enough time to learn and go back home so it affects a lot “Ananga Jemima a second year student also pleaded with the government to come their aide because the situation has dire consequences in the teaching and learning in the school ,according to her “ since last year 2020 our was ripped off and it affects our learning so much that when come in the afternoon ,we don’t enough time to learn,

when they also give us home work ,when get back home there various house chores to do so when we finish all those ones we tired we don’t get enough time to learn so its affect our education so much, our seniors are also going to write their BECE so it affects their learning so much, so we plead on the government to please come and roof our school for us “ she pleaded.

Amidst this situation, all attempt to speak to the District Director of Education Hajia Emelia Adisa Abdulai and officials of the Talensi District Assembly over abandoned rehabilitation schools has failed.
