The Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) Special Operations Team, currently on a tour in the Upper East Region of Ghana, has arrested 74 suspects in intelligence-led operations targeting narcotics peddling, violent crime, and other criminal activities in the region.According to police, the team carried out two separate intelligence operations, resulting in the arrest of the suspects.
Among them are Osman Addah 27 years Suleyman Tahirur 36 years , Musah Salifu 28 years , and Prince Kaba 32 years .Operation at Paga (Ghana–Burkina Faso border buffer zoneOn 20 May 2026, the team conducted a coordinated operation at Paga, within the Ghana–Burkina Faso border buffer zone.
The operation led to the arrest of 40 suspects, comprising 28 males and 12 females.The suspects include 23 Ghanaians, 8 Nigerians, 6 Burkinabés, 1 Malian, and 1 Togolese national, the police also recovered parcels and sacks of suspected narcotic substances, as well as five motorbikes believed to have been used for the distribution of drugs.
In a statement issued by the Upper East Regional Police Public Relations Department, the police said the team’s first operation took place on 22 May 2026 at identified criminal hotspots within the Navrongo Municipality.These hotspots included the Condemned Road Corridor, the “After Six” Spot, and the “Lighter Inn” Spot,the operation resulted in the arrest of 34 suspects, made up of 32 males and 2 females.Police further stated that 11 motorbikes, quantities of suspected narcotic substances, and assorted foreign cigarettes were retrieved during the operation.
Court appearance
The statement added that on the same day, the suspects were arraigned before High Court Two, presided over by His Lordship Justice Ernest Pascal Gemadzie, out of the total number of suspects, 16 were remanded into police custody in Navrongo and are scheduled to reappear in court on 4 June 2026, while the remaining 22 suspects are currently being profiled for further action.
The police statement also clarified that all suspects remain in custody and are assisting investigations, while efforts continue to identify and arrest other persons linked to criminal activities in the affected areas.
