The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has disclosed that the proposed Women’s Development Bank to be established under the government’s flagship 24-hour economy market project in Sandema will be operated entirely by women.

Addressing residents of the Builsa North Municipality, the Minister explained that once the 24-hour economy market is completed, all staff expected to work at the Women’s Development Bank will be women. He said the initiative is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s efforts to economically empower women and address the challenges women face.
Mr. Akamugri stated that the bank, which forms part of the 24-hour economy market project being constructed in Sandema, will provide financial support to women entrepreneurs and market women to help them scale up their businesses.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the 24-hour economy market, the Minister said the project fulfills a major campaign promise made by President Mahama during the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
He added that President Mahama conceived the 24-hour economy policy after extensive consultations with Ghanaians when he was serving as opposition leader.
He noted that in Builsa North, the Minister said, major concerns raised by residents and traditional authorities included youth unemployment, armed robbery, poor road networks, and the vulnerability of women.Mr. Akamugri emphasized that these concerns have not been ignored, adding that the 24-hour economy policy and the construction of the market are aimed at addressing some of those challenges particularly the unemployment issues.
He stated that, unlike the existing three-day market system in Sandema, the new market will operate 24 hours every day, including throughout the night, every week.
The Regional Minister further explained that the market is expected to create jobs through increased private sector participation.
He also noted that additional police officers and fire service personnel will be recruited to enhance security and support night trading activities. He thanked the people of the Builsa Traditional Area for their support for President Mahama, assuring them that the President remains committed to fulfilling his promises to the area.

The Member of Parliament for Builsa North, Mr. James Agalga, highlighted that many constituents have been calling to inquire about the 24-hour economy market project, which was a key campaign issue in 2024.
He explained that although the project was not an “event,” it represents progress, and that within a short time, it will be fully set in motion.
He said the current programme serves as a step toward implementing the President’s policies, adding that with time, improvements will be realized.
