The Upper East Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council, Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri, has ordered the final-year male students of the Bolgatanga Technical Institute (BOTECH) to vacate the school premises.Mr. Akamugri gave the directive on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, after intelligence reports exposed a planned riot on campus that same day.The school was shut down in 2025 following the suspension of five students for threatening school prefects.

The students had protested the enforcement of the school’s dress code regulations, which they claimed had not been properly communicated by school authorities. The situation escalated on the night of 15 August 2025, when students set fire to the school library and the office of the Senior House Master in response to the suspension.
According to Mr. Akamugri, the final-year students are currently writing their practical examinations, with theory exams expected to begin next week.
He stated that although such students previously caused disturbances while examinations were not going on , intelligence indicated that they intend to cause further trouble again this time while exams are in progress.
He emphasized that the security agencies would not allow the planned disruption to happen.

Mr. Akamugri said the trouble is coming mainly from the final-year students, particularly the boys, and that appropriate action will be taken to restore order. He added that while it is unfortunate that only a minority appears to be involved, the students are expected to comply. He warned that non-compliance would have consequences for those involved.

The Regional Minister cautioned the final-year male students that they must leave the campus. He said if they refuse, he would return with the military to enforce the directive.
Mr. Akamugri also stated that the disturbances being reported are not being driven by other groups in the school. He noted that second-year students are already out of the campus, first-year students are also away, and the final-year girls have not been part of the problem.
He called on all students to respect school rules and urged them to remain calm and allow the examinations to proceed peacefully. On that note, he closed the door on the matter with the assurance that security would take further steps if needed.
