The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri, participated in National Sanitation Day, which is observed on the first Saturday of every month. He urged residents to use the day to clean their homes and surrounding environments, to support public health and ensure a safe community.
Mr. Akamugri joined the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Roland Atanga Ayoo, along with some Camboo youth, drivers, and market women in the Bolgatanga Municipality.

After moving to Sumbrungu Town to witness the ongoing exercise, he noticed that some youth had abandoned the clean-up activity to play soccer, while other residents and students were actively engaged in sanitation work alongside the Bolgatanga Technical University. This observation angered the minister.
He questioned the youth on why they were not participating in the exercise an initiative promoted after President John Dramani Mahama announced that every community must come out to clean every first Saturday of the month, particularly in their homes and local environments for the sake of health and safety.

The Regional Minister stated that as a matter of responsibility, everyone must keep the environment clean. He emphasized that cleanliness is not meant for the government, but for the people’s own health.
He also explained that residents should continue cleaning until 11:00 a.m., when the day’s activities would officially end.
He further noted that the only business expected to remain open on that day is drugstores, due to health-related needs. According to him, sporting activities should not distract people from sanitation work.
He added that even if residents want to stay active, they can still contribute to cleanliness for example, by picking up litter and rubbish, which he described as part of keeping fit.
Mr. Akamugri concluded by reminding the youth that they should take a look at their own surroundings, ask themselves whether their environment is clean, and stop whatever they are doing and join the sanitation exercise.
