Mrs. Diana Asoketarige Ayamga, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo in Ghana’s Upper East Region, has been confirmed today, Thursday, 16 April 2026, as the second female DCE in the district since its creation in 1988.

She follows Rita Atanga, who was appointed as the district’s first female DCE in 2021.

Bongo District was created in 1988, through Legislative Instrument (LI) 1446. The first DCE was Mr. Jacob Agambire, who served as the Bongo District Secretary from 1988 to 1997.According to local accounts, the district was carved out of the former Bolgatanga District.

The Paramount Chief of Bongo, Naba Baba Salifu Alemyarum, is described as the architect behind the creation of the district in 1988.The population at the time was about 75,000, a figure made possible by carving out a portion of Yorogo, since the population of Bongo alone was estimated at 69,000 which would not have been enough to qualify for district status.

The Bongo District DCE , Mrs. Diana Asoketarige Ayamga, expressed heartfelt gratitude to God, President John Dramani Mahama, and the good people of Bongo for the trust and confidence placed in her.She said she was confirmed overwhelmingly with 44 votes, representing 81%, and she called on the people of Bongo to support her, just as they did for the late DCE Mr. Joseph Abaa Akaseke.

She also highlighted the vision of the late DCE , Mr Joseph Abaa Akasake and urged assembly members to unite and support efforts to push development forward in the district. She further expressed the belief that the confirmation would bring peace to her late colleague’s “husband soul,” wherever he may be, describing the late DCE as a development-oriented person who would have wanted Bongo to progress even more.

Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri urged assembly members to vote unanimously in honour of the late DCE Mr. Joseph Abaa Akansake, who was sworn in exactly one year ago today. He noted that time has passed since the Assembly last gathered to confirm a DCE, this time under what he described as unfortunate circumstances, following the late Hon. Akansake’s untimely demise.
