Mr Francis Tobg Nabdam, DCE

The District Chief Executive for the Nabdam district in the Upper East Region of Ghana, Mr .Francis Tobig, has announced plans to establish a 24-hour economy market at Pelugu, following consultations with traditional leaders and major stakeholders in the area.

In an exclusive interview on the Word Community Watch show on December 15, 2025, Mr. Francis Tobig emphasized that the Pelugu market is one of the largest in the district, generating significant internal revenue. However, the lack of government-constructed facilities has hindered revenue growth, as most vendors have built their own stores in an unstructured manner, creating operational challenges.

To address these issues, traditional leaders have willingly offered land for the construction of the 24-hour economy market,Mr. Francis Tobig assured that the district assembly is taking steps to complete proper documentation, ensuring there are no delays when the government awards the project contract to a contractor. He recalled challenges faced by previous administrations, particularly with the Agenda 111 project and E-block initiative initiated by President John Dramani Mahama, which stalled due to land disputes.Tobig reiterated that proper land documentation has been secured for the 24-hour economy market, the district and traditional authorities are fully prepared and awaiting the government’s decision, after which the project will be handed over to a contractor for construction.

Once completed, the 24-hour economy market will feature a comprehensive range of essential infrastructure components designed to facilitate continuous, safe, and efficient commercial activities.

The market will include various trading facilities, such as lockable shops, open sheds, and paved selling areas, for storage needs, there will be warehouses and cold storage units specifically for perishable goods, reliable lighting systems will ensure safety and visibility during nighttime, complemented by a clean water supply and robust sanitation infrastructure. Waste management will be effectively addressed with designated refuse disposal points and drainage systems to protect the environment.

Security will be reinforced with police posts and an on-site security presence, while emergency services will incorporate fire posts and hydrants. He added that to support transportation logistics, the market will feature lorry terminals for commercial vehicles along with spacious parking areas for large trucks and private vehicles, health services will also be available through on-site clinics, including a 6-bed clinic and pharmacies.

Additionally, there will be childcare centers to aid traders with family needs during extended operating hours, as well as designated food courts for vendors.

He announced that the women’s bank facility will also be featured and further facilitate financial transactions within the market, ensuring a comprehensive support system for all traders especially women in the Nabdam district.
