Specialist Doctors, Medical officers, Physician Assistants and other health professionals who refuse postings to the Upper East Region have been told to honour their postings to the region because it is a beautiful region and that once they visit it after few years, they would not want to go back to the south.
Addressing health personnel at the Dr. J. k. Awunoor-Williams In-service Training and Conference Centre in Bolgatanga, Upper East region during the 2022 Annual Performance Review Conference of the Upper East Regional Health Sector, the Kologo Naaba, Naba Clifford Asobayire who was the chairman of the program, bemoaned the refusal of some health personnel posted to the region to report usually with the excuse that the Upper East is far.
” The Upper East Regional House of chiefs is not so happy about what is happening. That is, the refusal of doctors posted into the region here. We are also human beings in the region so when they post a doctor to come, he/she should do their best to come and see what is also happening. There are doctors in other regions, when you talk to them, they say “that place is far so we can’t go.”
Naba Clifford said some of the doctors who eventually come, refuse postings to the southern regions.” but when they come here, even if they are asking them to go back they say no. “As for the cities especially Accra or Kumasi is choked” They will say there is stress there.”
He said doctors posted to the region should be told that there is a heaven in the region where their comfort will be assured. “Educate them and let them know that there is heaven here in the Upper East.”
The Upper East Regional Director of Health, Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi, in his welcome address disclosed that the region lacked some critical human resources including Specialist Doctors, Medical officers, Physician assistants, Midwives and Laboratory scientists which he said is affecting health care delivery .
Dr. Emmanuel said the sitaution was not getting better as 10 medical officers posted to the region in 2021 refused to report.
” Very worrying situation to note is that ,of the 10 medical officers posted to the region in 2021, none reported to work in the region”
