UE/R: Gh105,000.00 For National Cathedral is From Private Donations- Hon. Stephen Yakubu

UE/R Minister, Hon. Stephen Yajubu

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu has clarified the source of the Gh105,000.00 that was donated towards the construction of the National cathedral by the Regional Coordinating Council.

Speaking in a phone interview on the Word Community Watch Show with Mr. Simon Agana on Wednesday, 9th March, 2022, the Hon. Regional Minister, Mr. Stephen Yakubu said the donation was not from the Regional Coordinating Council or the District Assembly Common fund but wholly from individual donations from all the districts in the region towards the construction of the cathedral.

” The main fund raising happened at the various district or municipality level and we at RCC coordinated and the monies were gathered and handed to the RCC and we presented. And that was what happened. And these monies that were raised didn’t come from government coffers because it would not be prudent to take monies from Government coffers and given to the cathedral.”

The news of the donation by the RCC has go a lot of the populace infuriated with many wondering why a region that has most of its school children lying on the floor to have their studies as a result of lack of furniture and some sharing drinking water with animals or trekking long distances to access portable water, will rather choose to donate towards the construction of a cathedral instead of solving the teething problems of its people.

The Hon. Yakubu however said he expected the region to be happy that it has been able to contribute the said amount for the construction of the cathedral at the donation instead of politicising it.

” I thought that people would have been happy that in Upper East Region we have been able to raise this money to help the building of the cathedral but as usual, everything in this region is about political football, NDC, NPP and other parties and i want to through this medium appeal to people that, Upper East we want to also put our signature to this cathedral so in future when you and are not there, and our children go to Accra, they can also go and punch Upper East region and they will see the amount that Upper East also contributed in the building of this cathedral”

The Regional Minister has therefore appealed to the residents to see the cathedral as an edifice that they may visit one day or their children will go and it will be something good for all.

The host asked if he is happy to be associated with the donation as a Regional Minister looking at the mirage of challenges confronting the various districts , but the Regional Minister had this to say.

” I will be associated with anything at all that we are doing for the nation. If you are talking about the problems that we have to deal with as a nation, we all know this problems and they have been with us since independence and successive governments have tried to solve this problems. Human beings will always have problems ,even the developed worlds have problems. So as we try to resolve these problems to make people’s lives comfortable ,it does not mean that we should stop to do big things, dream big, put things in place where it will help everyone.”
