Bawku conflict: stop the cross-border escorts – Residents fume.

Concerns are been raised by a section of residents of Bawku over how some security personnel do offer escort to persons from Bawku into sister terrorists-neighboring-nations of Togo and Burkina-Faso.

Residents are raising fears that escorting people from Bawku to these known terrorists’ enclaves at this crucial time of a renewed gun battle in Bawku between the two rival tribes is unwise.

Reports are that some security personnel were seen escorting people from Bawku to neighboring Togo for purposes yet to be known. “we all know that terrorists’ groups are in these countries, so escorting people to these countries is unwise regardless of the purpose. Who knows what they are going to do there? How will we know If they go there and engage the services of terrorists gangs in the name of trade?”. A worried resident told this outlet in a state of anonymity.

The worried residents are of the opinion that the safety of people of Bawku can not be guaranteed if people are escorted to countries with clique of terrorists. “we are in Bawku and we are telling you that escorting people into Togo and Burkina at this crucial time is untoward. These things are part of the reasons the conflict still linger. If they go out there and engage the services of any terrorists group or even import weapons in the name of trade, how will we know? These escorts must stop.”

There are thus calling on the municipal police command to put a stop relative to the cross-border escorts.

Sporadic gun battle on the morning hours of Monday December 27, 2021 resulted in loss of lives and property with scores battling gunshots injuries.

The renewed conflict is said to have been ignited following plans by the Mamprusi divide to perform the funeral rites of one Alhaji Adam who died some 41 years ago. The overlord of Nayiri [the traditional home of Mamprugu] in 2011, wrote to the Bawku Municipal Assembly seeking security protections to perform the said funeral rites, but the municipal security council cited legal and security concerns as it declined the request. Kusasis and Mamprusis in Bawku have had a long-standing dispute.

Meanwhile, a security analyst, Adam Bona stated that security protocols don’t allow security officials from one country to cross to another Country without proper engagement.” Our security officials can’t lead traders to foreign countries without being granted access into that country by the visiting country, it doesn’t work that way if you go they will arrest and detain you  because our protocols don’t allow security officials to cross into a neighboring country, we need certain  permission to do that , unless, of course, the person suspects officials complicity”
