The Member of Parliament for the Talensi Constituency in the Upper East Region, Hon. Benson Tongo Baba, has donated 70 sewing machines and 70 hair dryers to 140 women in his constituency. The donation is in fulfillment of a campaign promise he made in the lead up to the 2020 parliamentary elections.
The items were donated by the Vice chairman of the NDC, Mr. Maxwell Yelsomakpelem-Eteme at the constituency office, in the stead of the MP who is busy with parliamentary duties in parliament.
Expaining the rational for the donation, Mr. Yelsomakpelem-Eteme said the essence of the donation is to equip and empower the women to be economically capable and to check rural-urban migration in the constituency.
” We see that the poverty level is too much, unemployment is high and rural-urban migration is high. So it was an idea to ensure that a lot of young women are retained in the district or have something to do to be able to fend for themselves and their families.”
Yelsomakpelem-Eteme added that a week ago a similar donation was done where 45 water pumping machines were donated to 45 groups of 8 members each, all aimed at empowering the people economically to reduce the poverty level in the constituency.
” This is not the first time that the MP is donating working tools to menbers of the constituency. Just last week he presentyed about 45 pumping machines to the dry season farmers. All this is aim at reducing the poverty level in the area.”
He said the beneficiaries are drawn from all corners of the constituency through a non partisan process by a committee. “We don’t deal with party people. they are all our people, we don’t ask of your party colour or party card. They are all our people.”
