The Ghana Union of Students have called on the Board of Directors of the Achimota Senior High School to rescind its decision to appeal the high court ruling on the admission of the two rastafarian students, Tyrone Maaghuy AND Oheneba Nkrabea into the school.
The union said it believes that the ruling of the High Court agree with and in line with the letter and spirit of the 1992 constitution on matters of freeedom pf religion and the manifestation of same.
“We urge Achimota School and its Board of Governors to abide by the dictates of the ruling of the High Court. A decision we agree with and strongly believe is in line with the letter and spirit of the 1992 constitution on matters of FREEDOM OF RELIGION AND THE MANIFESTATION OF SAME, and the RIGHT TO EDUCATION.. The National Union of Ghana Students ( NUGS ) therefore frowns on the decision to appeal.”
The group also argue that though it acknowledges the right of the school to appeal the ruling of the court, the school must also be mindful of the psychological trauma they are causing the students.
“Achimota School has the right to Appeal but must be mindful of the psychological trauma they are causing the students, who, if the appeal continues will be living in anxiety of their fates by the end of the Appeals Courts Hearing. This is not right and should not continue.”

the Human Rights Court in Accra on Monday, ruled that the school admit the two rasta students. In a ruling Monday afternoon, the Human Rights Court One, presided over by Justice Gifty Adjei Addo, held that failure to admit the two students because of their dreadlocks, which is a manifestation of their religious right is a violation of their human rights, right to education and dignity. the court also ordered the school to admit the twom students to continue with their education.
The NUGS also called on the Achimota school to “take steps to avail the students to a Counselor during their initial stay in school since the media hounding they have been exposed to by this impasse has a tendency to affect them psychologically.
