Kasena Nankana West: 9 Communities Cut Off From Major Towns, Access to Social Amenities Hampered.

Nine communities in the Kansena Nankana West district of the Upper East Region have been cut off from the district capital, Paga and other major towns including the Sirigu market.

The only bridge that connects the communities to the district capital, the Sirigu market, Zokor and the regional capital,Bolgatanga, the Awooba river was on Monday 7th September,2020 washed away by rain water.

The communities include: Basengo and Amuntanga, Wudingo,Namyorogo,Nyandolungu, Yua,Gingirinko,Taribiisi,Bugsongo,Nyangolingo,

It has been raining continuously for three days and the bridge couldn’t withstand the magnitude of the water that was passing through it and gave up to the power of the water current.

The nine communities have 2 CHPS compounds and about four Junior High Schools. Most of these facilities have no accommodation facilities for the staff, forcing most of them to commute from the district capital, Sirigu township and Bolgatanga.

Mr. Akubuglugo Azotipeliba, a Community member and the district director of Red Cross society of Ghana said “ Most of this teachers and nurses stay outside these nine communities and it will be very difficult for them to come to work”

“only few will risk their lives to cross over this river to render their services and you should understand them.”

Access to social services by this Community members has been hampered and many houses submerged or collapsed rendering most inhabitants homeless and forcing them to find shelter in basic schools in the communities.

The District coordinator of Red cross society of the Kasena Nankana District said  “the communities have been left in an an island because they cannot access social services from the district capital or Sirigu township or go to Bolga which is the regional capital, the alternative would have been that they move to Yelwongo which is Burkina Faso but they have been cut of from there because the two rivers bordering them is full making it impossible to access the town.”

The regional coordinator of NADMO said he was yet to receive detailed report of the development from his district coordinator.
