Concerned Youth Group in the Bolgatanga East District of Ghana’s Upper East Region took to the streets on 10 April 2026 to demand urgent attention to the Bolgatanga Bawku Pulmakom road, including the Kulaa Bridge stretch.
The demonstration aimed to pressure government to fix the road, which the group says has been left uncompleted and is now claiming lives.

The Bolgatanga East Concerned Youth Group expressed disappointment that the Bolgatanga–Bawku Pulmakom road project is not included in the government’s Big Push initiatives, even though several Members of Parliament who use the road such as the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga East, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine , Attorney General and Minister and other MPs including Mr Mahama Ayariga (Bawku Central), Majority Leader of Parliament, Mark Kurt Nawaane (Nabdam), and MPs from Bawku West, Binduri, Pusiga, Garu, Tempane, among othes have remained silent.According to the group, the Zuarungu–Bolgatanga road, particularly the section from the Timber Market to the bridge, has been abandoned for several years. During the dry season, the road becomes extremely dusty, while in the rainy season it becomes impassable.

The youth group reports that the situation has contributed to an increase in respiratory illnesses among children and older persons, frequent accidents involving motorbikes and other vehicles, and growing hardship for residents and motorists.

The group, led by Anaba Gebhard (Convenor), called on government to urgently address the deplorable state of the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom road, especially near the Timber Market at Bolgatanga and the Kulaa Bridge.
Timeline and demands.
The group stated that the road has been abandoned since February 2023, adding that conditions have continued to worsen for road users and residents.

They attributed the increase in respiratory problems to excessive dust caused by the damaged road.To respond to the dust challenge and improve safety, the group demanded that a grader and a water tanker be deployed within five (5) days.
They said failure to do so would worsen the situation and could lead to further public demonstrations.

Concerned Youth Group gave government until Thursday, 16 April 2026 to fix the road.
If no action is taken, they warned they may stage another demonstration to demand that the road is repaired and made motorable.
Anaba Gebhard also expressed disappointment that the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri, and the Bolgatanga East District Chief Executive, Mr. Jacob Aka-eri Abugre, did not appear at the demonstration to receive their petition. He said the group will continue their protest if the affected portion is not tarred to reduce accidents and dust and to ensure the entire Bolgatanga Bawku Pulmakom road becomes fully accessible.

The Upper East Regional Deputy Police Commander ACP Joseph Darison Wusi arrived at the demonstration and told the youth group that the regional minister, who was expected to receive the petition, was not around. He pleaded with them to submit the petition so he could help hand it over to the minister for action.
Anaba Gebhard reiterated that government should fix the road situation within a week, and added that the group would not hesitate to protest again if the road remains in its current condition after the deadline of Thursday, 16 April 2026.
