Residents of Sirigu and the paramount chief of the Sirigu Traditional Area, Naba Roland Akwara Atogumdeya III, in the Kasena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region of Ghana, have expressed deep gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for nominating Stephen Aeke Akurugu as District Chief Executive (DCE).
At a media briefing held at the Sirigu paramount chief’s palace, Mr. Eden Akurugu, the secretary to the paramount chief, praised the president for this historic nomination. He noted that since 1992, no member from Sirigu has been appointed to head the assembly as DCE for the Kassena Nankana West District.
“It’s with profound gratitude and immense pride that we gather here today to thank His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama for choosing our esteemed son, Honourable Stephen Aeke Akurugu, for this important role,” Mr. Eden stated. “This choice reflects the President’s commitment to recognizing and nurturing youthful talents from all corners of the nation for national development.”
The nomination marks a significant milestone for the community, instilling a sense of pride and optimism among residents. The people of Sirigu firmly believe that Honourable Akurugu possesses the vision, expertise, and dedication required to successfully advance the district.
Furthermore, the community is grateful to the president for continuing construction projects initiated under the previous administration. For instance, the Bost Culvert bridge, which links Sirigu through Zorkor to Bolgatanga, has been completed, significantly reducing travel time for residents and facilitating access to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. Progress on the drainage system in the economically vital Sirigu market is also underway, and residents hope for its swift completion.
In expressing their thanks, Mr. Eden acknowledged the support from the Regional Minister, the Regional Chairman of the NDC, and their executives, which played a crucial role in the nominee’s endorsement. He also expressed appreciation to all chiefs in the district for their warm reception and support during Akurugu’s campaign for the position.
In an exclusive interview, DCE Stephen Aeke Akurugu highlighted the historic significance of his nomination, stating, “Since 1992, there has not been a DCE from the Sirigu community. I am grateful to President John Dramani Mahama for this opportunity to serve.”
Akurugu acknowledged the high expectations from the residents, emphasizing that as a rural and border district, improving the road network and agriculture are key priorities. He plans to collaborate closely with key stakeholders to enhance these sectors, as the district primarily relies on agriculture.
Additionally, he aims to work with the Member of Parliament to address poverty and utilize existing resources effectively. “Many youths travel to the southern part of the country for non-profitable ventures. The MP has initiated programs to promote farming, and I see this as an opportunity to work together to realize this vision for the district.”
