Edward Adeti has been crowned the 28th Best Journalist of the Year at the P.V.A. Ansah Journalist of the Year Awards, presented by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) during the 2025 World Press Freedom Day and Honours Night.
Adeti, a fearless and outstanding investigative journalist based in the Upper East Region of Ghana, has made significant contributions to justice delivery and health system reforms through his undercover investigations. His hard-hitting reporting has transformed the landscape of public accountability in Ghana.
In recognition of his achievements, he received a cash prize of 50,000 Ghana cedis.
Speaking at the event, Adeti urged the GJA to advocate for journalists whose freedoms are compromised by assaults or other forms of intimidation. He emphasized the need for the association to go beyond merely issuing press statements when journalists are attacked.
“The GJA has been doing well, but they need to take further action beyond statements when we are beaten or assaulted,” he stated.
Adeti also highlighted the struggles of many journalists in Ghana who are seeking freedom from poverty, intimidation, and discrimination.
During the same ceremony on May 2, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour addressed the growing threats to media freedom in Ghana, revealing that 11 journalists were assaulted in February alone. He called on the Ghana Police Service to take urgent steps to address these attacks on media practitioners.
“The records are concerning, especially regarding economic, security, and legislative indicators. We urge the police to take attacks on journalists seriously, ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice to deter future incidents and end impunity,” Dwumfour said.
Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, also spoke at the event, cautioning journalists against the unchecked use of artificial intelligence in journalism. He called for the development of policy frameworks to ensure AI is used responsibly.
