UE/R: ‘Your report on Martyrs of Uganda Health Centre brought us drastic change’ — Sirigu Chief tells Word FM

Naba Atogumdeya Roland Akwara III

The paramount chief of the Sirigu Traditional Area in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region of Ghana, Naba Atogumdeya Roland Akwara III, has expressed gratitude to Word FM for its report on the Martyrs of Uganda Health Centre, a facility run by the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese.

In early 2024, some residents complained to Word FM about the facility, which had been spending more than Gh¢89,210 on a doctor while struggling to provide essential drugs and consumables like gloves and malaria test kits.

Speaking exclusively to Word FM, Naba Atogumdeya noted that the report had led to significant changes at the Sirigu Health Centre. He urged the media to continue monitoring the facility to ensure proper healthcare for the people of Sirigu.

He stated, “The report carried out by Word FM has brought a drastic change to the Sirigu Health Centre… It exposed the people of Sirigu to the ills of the facility, which was drawing the health of my people backwards. As I speak today, that facility is now running a paperless system, and some rooms that were defunct with leaking roofs have been repaired and put into use.”

Naba Atogumdeya continued, “I want to thank you, the media, for the investigations that you carried out on the health facility. Your report helped us to appreciate what was going on in the facility; it made us understand what was wrong, which was drawing our quality healthcare backwards. The report led to the mass transfer of health workers and brought in new staff.”

He also shared that a doctor, accountant, and some staff from the facility recently visited him to report improvements. “They told me that they have written to someone to talk to a non-governmental organization to assist them with a maternity ward. A doctor was sent to Accra on that effect, and this means that there is improvement, and that is exactly what they want,” he said.

While expressing his gratitude to Word FM, Naba Atogumdeya emphasized the importance of continued oversight: “We are grateful to Word FM, but we still entreat you to keep your eyes on the facility because if you don’t keep monitoring their activities, they would sleep again.”
