The Bolgatanga East District in the Upper East Region has commissioned and handed over two basic school blocks in two communities,Dachio Tenga-Noore and Bosiya.
The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Jacob Aka-eri Abugre, officially handed over a three-unit classroom blockfor Dachio Tenga-Noore Primary School, and a six-unit classroom block for Bosiya Primary School to support teaching and learning. These facilities are expected to improve access to basic education for pupils who previously had to travel long distances to attend school.
Speaking at the handover, Mr. Jacob Aka-eri Abugre explained that the educational facilities were constructed through the District Assembly Common Fund. He said each school has been provided with a three-classroom unit block with ancillary facilities, including 4-sitter toiletsand urinals/ancillary toilet facilities for each school.He described the handover as timely and a response to the most pressing needs of the communities, noting that schools are scheduled to reopen for the 2026/2027 academic year by the Ghana Education Service on 8th September 2026.
Mr. Abugre said the Dachio Tenga-Noore three-classroom block has brought the basic school to an improved operational status. According to him, the community’s primary school initially had only three classrooms to accommodate pupils from Basic 1 to Basic 6. At the same time, the Junior High School (JHS) programme was run on the same premises, resulting in overcrowding.
He added that teachers even resorted to using plywood to partition some classrooms to create spaces for both basic and JHS students, which he described as unacceptable.He recalled that during a campaign visit in 2024, the community appealed to the Member of Parliament, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to provide additional classroom facilities.
He said Dr. Ayine, discussed the urgent need with the DCE and supported the construction of the additional classrooms to improve access to education.In the case of Bosiya, the DCE explained that residents previously had no basic school facility within the community, forcing many pupils to commute long distances to access education.
He indicated that the nearest schools were in places such as Yarkabisi, Polgo, and sometimes even farther communities like Gambigo and Duligo.He noted that in 2015, the Member of Parliament tried to collaborate with the community to establish a school.
He said an agreement was reached where the MP would provide all building materials, while the community would contribute labour (free work) toward the project. He also mentioned that a similar initiative was implemented at Kumbosigo, which was eventually completed and in use since 2015.
However, at Bosiya, the MP provided the materials and community members supported the construction effort, until the project faced challenges.The DCE further stated that the Northern Development Authority (NDA) also initiated a KG block for the community, but the project remained incomplete.
He said the contractor later left due to non-payment of certificates, and the Assembly attempted to take over the project but could not obtain the key documents required for completion, such as the award letter and the certificates that had been honoured.
He added that the District will review the situation and assess how the kindergarten block initiated by the NDA can be supported to benefit the communities.
Mrs. Agatha Awiah, the District Director of the Ghana Education Service for the Bolgatanga East District, expressed her gratitude to the DCE and the Member of Parliament for the constituency for their unwavering support to education in the district. She urged parents to continue supporting their children’s education by providing their basic needs so they can learn well in school.
She also appealed to the Member of Parliament and the District Assembly to support the Junior High School in the Dachio Tenga-Noore community with the necessary facilities to ensure its smooth running.
