The National Association of Graduates Teachers in the Upper East Region (NAGRAT) has sensitized students of Zamse Senior High Technical School to mark the World Menstrual Hygiene Day, with the aim of breaking the silence, myths, and stigma surrounding menstruation.
Speaking exclusively to the media at the sidelines of the event at Zamse Senior High Technical School, Mrs. Achiisah Scholastica, Regional Girl Child Desk Officer for NAGRAT in the Upper East Region, explained that NAGRAT has chosen the school to create awareness about menstruation and to promote good menstrual hygiene practices among girls and women.
She stressed that the program also seeks to encourage a supportive environment where girls can receive dignity, support, education, and access to menstrual products. Mrs. Scholastica noted that menstruation is a natural biological process and that every girl deserves to be treated with respect during this stage of life.
She further stated that NAGRAT educated both boys and girls on menstrual hygiene. According to her, when boys and girls learn about menstruation, girls feel more confident when they begin to menstruate, and they also know how to seek help when needed.
She mentioned that boys’ understanding is important, especially when students experience menstruation in school and sometimes in the classroom.
Mrs. Scholastica said NAGRAT joins the rest of the world to observe Menstrual Hygiene Day on 28th,May 2026, at Zamse Senior High Technical School. She added that the involvement of boys is crucial because some do not understand that menstruation is normal. She indicated that some boys wrongly believe girls should not be menstruating, and therefore may fail to support their female classmates or peers but resort to stigmatisation.
She appealed to parents to support their girls by closely monitoring them especially as they enter their menstrual cycle. She said that even when some girls report that they are bleeding from their private parts, some parents do not take it seriously or sit them down to educate them properly, which can leave girls to struggle unnecessarily.
Speaking exclusively to , Mr. John Jesus Akunzebe, Chairman of NAGRAT in the Upper East Region, highlighted why the association decided to observe Menstrual Hygiene Day with the students of Zamse Senior High Technical School.
He said NAGRAT intends to use the event to advocate in other schools and educate students on hygiene. He also noted that the organization aims to promote a stigma-free culture and to encourage a supportive community where girls can feel comfortable during their menstruation.
Mr. Akunzebe added that the association chose Zamse Senior High Technical School and selected girls for the program to help them continue advocacy efforts. He said the event will also help students learn new things, reduce tension among new students, and ensure safe and healthy hygiene practices throughout the year and semester.
He emphasized that NAGRAT wants male students to develop the habit of supporting the girl child so that girls can stay confident in school without fear, embarrassment, or stigma—especially when menstruation occurs unexpectedly in classrooms.
