The Upper East Regional Police Command initiatiàlly, initiated investigations into a robbery along the Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Bawku Division, which resulted in the tragic death of a police officer on duty.Preliminary investigations reveal that on Sunday, February 8, 2026, two police officers traveling towards Zebilla encountered a robbery in progress.
During the incident, the robbers opened fire, injuring one of the officers
.A responding police team, following a distress call, rushed the injured officer to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead.
His body has since been deposited in the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, deployed a special team to identify and apprehend all those involved in the robbery. This led to the arrest of a suspect, Mr. Simon Apusiga, alias Ananga, a 42-year-old man from the Bawku West District.
He was arrested on February 10, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation at his hideout in Tarkwa Huni Valley in the Western Region.Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect fled Zebilla shortly after the incident and was later traced to the Western Region.
According to a statement signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, and will soon be brought before the court to face the full rigors of the law.
Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects involved in the case.

These four notorious robbers, using two motorbikes, ended up with a total of four, having stolen additional bikes, cash, and personal belongings, including mobile phones, from residents in Dachio, Bolgatanga East District.Furthermore, security concerns are escalating in the Upper East, Northeast, and Northern Regions due to police vacating their duty posts at various checkpoints.
This has allowed the army robbers to exploit the situation, terrorizing residents through robberies and even setting fire to some checkpoints.
Recently, army robbers have utilized police barricades in the Doba community, a suburb of the Kassena Nankana Municipality, to rob residents, commuters, and travelers on January 25, 2026. This situation has created heightened fear and panic in the region.
