An 18-year-old man from the Doba community, located in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of Ghana’s Upper East Region, has confessed to murdering his 90-year-old father, Mr. Nyaaba Apungo.

He also inflicted serious injuries on his mother and sister-in-law, Anabel Zinge, age 35, on February 15, 2026. After attempting to mutilate himself with a cutlass, he fled into nearby bushes and was later apprehended by his family members.

In an exclusive interview, Police Commander DSP Lawrence Abaaduko Adombire stated that during preliminary interrogations, the suspect confessed to have murdered but expressed confusion about his motives, suggesting he might have been under the influence of drugs, including marijuana.

According to his account, on that fateful day around 10 a.m., he retrieved a cutlass from a shed in front of his house and used it to attack his father, mother, and sister-in-law.

After the assaults, he discarded the cutlass, attempted to injure his own genital area, and ran into the bushes where he was ultimately captured.Following his arrest, he was taken to the Navrongo police station but was bleeding profusely. He later overheard hospital staff mention that his father had succumbed to his injuries.

Nyaaba Atingane stated: “On February 15, 2026, around 10 a.m., I took a cutlass from the shed in front of our house. I used it to attack my father, mother, and sister-in-law.

After inflicting wounds, I discarded the cutlass and hurt myself before fleeing into the bushes. I was hiding when community members found and arrested me.

After my arrest, I was taken to Navrongo police station, where the officers brought me to the hospital due to my injuries. While in the emergency ward, I saw my mother and sister-in-law being treated, and I overheard that my father had died from his wounds.” Nyaaba  Atingane noted .

DSP Lawrence Adombire noted that the motive behind the young man’s actions remains unclear, and the family did not comprehend what could have triggered such violence.

The mother explained that on that particular morning, the family was at home, but she had stepped out briefly to prepare food for her husband, who was unwell. Upon returning, she heard cries outside and found her husband lying in a pool of blood. When she tried to assist him, the young man attacked her, and as she struggled, he also struck her sister-in-law as she attempted to intervene.
