The chief of the Nuugu community, Bugre Wuni Bimbimdsumid Nalarb-zienum Nuugu Daan, has announced that residents will not vote in the upcoming 2024 general election unless their community is connected to the national electricity grid.

According to Nuugu Daan, the community has rejected local politicians, feeling neglected and abandoned by them. He emphasized that if electricity is not provided, the people of Nuug will abstain from voting, urging the world to recognize their dire situation, which has led many to abandon the community.

Nuugu Daan lamented that many residents have fled due to the unbearable hardships they face. He noted that teachers often refuse postings to the Nuugu community because of poor road conditions and a lack of essential amenities, which jeopardize the future of their children.

“ This is what is worrying me, and i want everyone to know, including everyone in the country, i want everyone to listen to my cry.
We don’t have electricity in this community, and it is largely affecting us
That is why most of young men and women are running away from the community which we don’t have anything to do about that, the lack of electricity is affecting our health issues and education, no community can exist without a health centre , electricity and education most teachers don’t accept posting here because of the electricity, where will they charge their phones and do other writing in the night, so if we don’t see the electricity we will not vote .
I have not rejected any politicians they have rather rejected and neglected me ,so I’m pleading with the government and everyone to come to our aid”Nuugu Daan.

Situation of community

The Nuugu community shares a boundary with the North East Region along the White Volta and is primarily composed of farmers. Many residents lack basic social services, including access to electricity, education, and reliable transportation.

Speaking exclusively to word news, the District Chief Executive for Talensi, Mr. Thomas Doanab Wuni Pearson, he  mentioned that the abandoned construction of the Pwalungu Multipurpose Dam has led to plans for the resettlement of the Nuugu community. As a result, he stated that the government can not extend electricity to the area. He added that the electricity poles currently in the community were installed by the previous National Democratic Congress government for electoral gains and that there are no documents on file regarding the contractor responsible for the work. He reiterated that unless there is a national plan from the Ministry of Energy, the Talensi District lacks the capacity to extend electricity to the Nuugu community.
