UE/R: Pass the community service Bill into law- Legal Resource Centre

Program officer for the Legal Resource Centre, Mr. Enock Jengre, has called on the government of Ghana, the Attorney general, and the Parliament of Ghana as well as other stakeholders to pass the Community Service Bill into law.

He indicated that when the Community Service Bill is passed into law, it will help ease our prisons because the bill seeks to fine persons who have committed minor offenses to be given punishment that will be of benefits to the community. Punishments such as cleaning of gutters, constructing works in the community and community activities instead of putting the person behind bars and using the limited resources to take care of the person.

“Community Service Bill is about a bill that seeks to look at instead of a person who have committed a minor offense, should not be put behind bars. It sakes to find the person some community work to do so that instead of putting the person behind bars and using our mega resources to feed again, lets give the person some community work to do, by so doing, we will get benefits from the person. The person is been punished, while we are also getting the benefits. For instance; weeding, diselting of gutters, cleaning the market”.

He added that the Legal Resource Centre is a nongovernmental organization established in 1998. It aids persons who cannot afford the services of a lawyer with legal support. Run projects access to justice, minimize the injustice of the issue, as well running research on the impact of climate change.

Speaking to the media in Bolgatanga on the area of climate change and it impact in the society, Mr. Jengre Enock highlighted the aim of the training to rally citizen support to government so that government is able to implement the commitment or its target in the national transition energy framework.

The program officer indicated that there is the need to tap into the wasted sunshine energy into some purposefulness that can solve our energy problem in the region.
He, however, noted that there was the need to achieve about 98% electricity connection by 2030, but the coverage was hovering between 76% to 78% electricity connection in the country.
He disclosed that for the country to achieve a maximum target, it depends on us as citizens’ commitment and our cabinet commitment to electrifying our communities that do not have access to the national grid.

Mr. Enock entreated the citizens of Ghana to pay attention to the number of stars on gadgets they buy to ensure energy conservation.
