Bawku central market currently unsafe – Kusaug Youth Movement.

A youth group called Kusaug Youth Movement has kicked against plans by the Bawku Municipal Security Council to direct all traders in the Bawku enclave to the Bawku central market. The group in a press release stated that although it has associated itself with the directive, it is currently unsafe for traders to move to the central market for business, considering the current fragile security situation.

It has emerged that numerous market-squares have been created in the wake of the renewed chieftaincy conflict in the municipality. The creation of these markets is said to be as a result of the ongoing cool killings that appear to be unending. The rival factions (Kussasis and Mamprusis) are said to have developed some deep mistrust for which reason they don’t engage in any business transaction since the renewed conflict erupted. But the municipal security council wants that mistrust broken hence the efforts to direct all traders to the central market. This move has however not gone well with the Kusaug Youth movement who described it as security unwise. When contacted, the Bawku Municipal Chief Executive Amadu Hamza Mean while, the Bawku Municipal chief executive, noted that the security is ready to offer protection to the traders should they return to the central market. He added that the issue of insecurity  doesn’t arise according to the security personnel. According to him, it is improper to allow people trade anywhere within the municipality. He opined that all artificial markets that came up in  the wake of the conflict be closed to allow a total return to the central market.

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE,

12/01/22.

Kusaug Youth Movement.

The Bawku central market is currently unsafe for business!

Kusaug Youth Movement wish to associate ourselves with efforts currently initiated by relevant stakeholders aimed at facilitating the return of traders to the Bawku central market for business. This move, we are convinced are part of steps to promote peace and foster unity, but we are of a strong believe that the timing is totally wrong and that this effort should be deferred immediately.

Our hearts are still stained with nostalgic memories of how innocent traders lost their lives and property to this conflict.

Just yesterday (11/01/22), a man named Awuku Welder, was shot dead at a funeral ground in town. Two men from Garu were kidnapped and nearly lynched. On the eve of the Samampiid festival, a middle-aged man was killed in town.  Another sad incident of how a pregnant woman got killed at Daduri still lingers in our minds. These and many other sad incidents are still fresh in our minds and saddens our hearts.

As peace lovers, we are always ready to assist relevant stakeholders towards finding lasting peace in Bawku and Kusaug in general.

we wish to congratulate the hard-working security officials for their efforts in ensuring peace and order in Bawku. As peace lovers, we, however wish to state that the safety of traders in the Bawku central market cannot be guaranteed for now!

It will be in the best interest of all traders that this decision is put on hold until guaranteed peace returns!
