Parents and their children in Binduri District, Upper East Region, are stranded and emotionally distressed after the Mathematics objectives papers of 165 BECE candidates were reportedly missing at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The affected candidates, from six Junior High Schools, have been unable to access complete results through the BECE results portal. While some subjects appear on the portal, the Mathematics results are marked as “pending.” Parents say they have been moving from one internet café to another, hoping to see updates, but the situation remains unresolved. Confusion over missing results.
Speaking to Word news , Mr. Paul Asaana Ayamba, a parent and Headteacher of Yalugu EA Junior High School, said the mathematics objectives papers for the 165 students who wrote the Binduri District Examination Centre for the 2026 BECE were among several examination papers that were sent out and signed by the examination officials.
He explained that many families first believed their wards were the only ones affected, but soon more parents reported the same problem, creating widespread panic that some students’ examinations had been cancelled.
Mr. Ayamba said when parents contacted the examination officer, they were told that WAEC was working on the pending Mathematics objectives papers, but no Mathematics results have appeared on the portal since then.
He added that the matter is affecting not only the students’ futures but also parents’ confidence, especially because many believed their children’s school performance would be fairly captured in the final grading process. Parents urge fast action from WAEC and Ministry.
Mr. Ayamba appealed to the Sector Minister of Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, to intervene urgently by directing WAEC to resolve the issue so candidates can obtain their results and placement.
He pleaded with the minister to visit Binduri District to personally assess the situation and provide a rapid remedy, adding that parents have requested that the matter be resolved by Monday, 14 September 2026.
He said if the situation improves by then, the affected families would be grateful to the minister and the authorities involved.
Call to consider theory marks and continuous assessment.
Speaking, to Mr. Awini Thomas the District Director of Education in Binduri, said WAEC officials could not trace the candidates’ shading sheets. He questioned why the missing objectives paper should prevent the release of results entirely, considering that candidates also wrote Mathematics theory and had continuous assessment records.
He argued that if only one component of the examination is missing, WAEC should still consider other available marks such as, mathematics theory examination,continuous assessment,other components already captured Mr. Awini stressed that the challenge is causing serious hardship because parents are actively competing for school placements for their children.
He said the delay is also affecting communities and increasing tension among families.
Appeal for immediate grading and placement
Mr. Awini appealed to WAEC to review and grade the affected students using available components, so that the children can get their results and proceed with placement without further delay.
He noted that the affected parents mostly live in the Northern parts of Ghana, and if they were in the Southern sector this issue would have been a court case , therefore cannot easily pursue the matter through legal processes.
He appealed for swift action so the students can return to school.
