NAVRONGO: PTA Opposes Decision To Transfer Headmistress and Seven Others

Leadership of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the Our Ladies of Lourdes (OLL) Junior High School (JHS) has opposed a decision by the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Upper East Region to transfer the Headmistress and seven other teachers of the school.

Madam Alice Ellen Abeeri-inga, the Education Director, took the decision to transfer Madam Osberge Parese the Headmistress and seven other teachers for alleged lateness to school.

The Association, in a letter jointly signed by its Executives, and addressed to the Municipal Chief Executive to intervene in the issue, said final year pupils of the school were preparing for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) slated for October, and the action could affect their performance.

The PTA demanded a reverse of the Director’s decision, insisting that per the GES rules, teachers were not supposed to be transferred abruptly.

The PTA expressed dissatisfaction with the action of the Director, and said “We, therefore, wish to appeal to your distinguished office to intervene in this matter.”

When Wordnews contacted Madam Abeeri-inga, she confirmed her action and said “The transfer was due to the teachers lateness to school, and to ensure proper teaching and learning in the school.”

She said when she visited the school on May 17, 2022 at about 7:37am, the school was still locked, even though they met with stakeholders in the Municipality and agreed to start lessons at 7:30am and close at 2:30pm.

“OLL JHS is on my way to the office. On the 17/05/2022, I was going to the office and saw the children standing. I decided to pass by. When I got there, the classrooms were locked. I decided to conduct assembly. When I finished, then two teachers arrived as at 7:37am.

“The school doors were still locked, I initially planned to effect the transfers after the term, but per the behaviour of the teachers, either they heard of the transfer or as is their nature by reporting late to school, I decided to effect it immediately so that the new staff with the anxiety, will prepare them for the exams,” she said.

Some teachers who spoke to Wordnews on condition of anonymity, denied the allegations that they were no teachers in the school as at the time the Director arrived, they claimed that two teacher were on duty that week and were present as at the time Madam Alice EllenAbeeri-inga arrived.

They explained that a colleague left the keys to the school in the pair of trousers he wore to school the previous day, and had rushed back home to pick the keys as at the time the Director visited.
