Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri, the Upper East Regional Minister, has disclosed that the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr. Kofi Adams, has announced government’s plan to construct the Bolgatanga Sports Stadium, also known as the Upper East Regional Sports Stadium.
The development of the stadium dates back over five decades to the 1970s, with records often citing efforts around 1975, although the project has remained largely uncompleted and abandoned as a standard functional facility since it was established in 1970.
Speaking after holding a meeting with Hon. Kofi Adams on the construction of the stadium, Mr. Akamugri said an inspection team will arrive in the region in the first week of October 2026 to inspect and assess the over 56-year-old sports facility that has been abandoned for years.
He added that the planned construction will include the main pitch and a separate training pitch, basketball and volleyball courts, sports tracks, a swimming pool, high jump and long jump facilities, as well as conference rooms for boxing and other indoor games.
Mr. Akamugri indicated that construction of the 56-year-old stadium is expected to commence before the end of 2026.
He expressed his gratitude to H.E. John Dramani Mahama and Hon. Kofi Adams, saying that once completed, the stadium will provide the Upper East Region with a standard multi-purpose facility.
According to him, the project will help eliminate the need for local teams to travel long distances for competitive events, thereby reducing travel costs.
