Mrs. Hajia Jemila Kukrug has been elected as the first-ever female Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Talensi Constituency of the Upper East Region—since 1992.
She is also the only female elected Chairperson in the entire NPP 2026 constituency elections race. Many women, she noted, contested mainly for Women Organizer positions due to fears of intimidation, as some men often refer to party chairmanship positions as roles meant for men.
She said women, however, play key strategic roles in peacebuilding, cohesion, mobilization of people and resources, and overall party development creating avenues for political power at both constituency and presidential levels.
In the Talensi Constituency Chairperson election, which saw three candidates, Hajia Jemila Kukrug secured 406 votes out of 826 total votes cast,Mr. Kojo Dengzee A.,72 votes , Mr. Fahad Bagmzritame, 341 votes .
Speaking exclusively to Word News, Hajia Jemila Kukrug expressed gratitude to the people of the Talensi Constituency for making her “proud as the first-ever female Chairperson” of the NPP.
She appealed to all party members to work with her to ensure that the next parliamentary candidate wins the Talensi seat, arguing that they have done it before. She emphasized that the party now needs to focus on mobilizing women, youth, and the entire electorate in Talensi.According to her, strengthening the party and ensuring unity and transparency will be key to achieving political victory.
She added that as Chairperson, she will organize the women and also work to organize the youth and the general membership to help the NPP win political power.She further stated that the ultimate goal is to ensure that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is elected President of Ghana in the 2028 elections.
Hajia Jemila Kukrug also called on her contenders to rally behind her to promote unity within the NPP in the Talensi Constituency.
She stressed that her victory is not for her alone, but for the entire Talensi people and for the NPP.She said: “We should come together to advise each other, work together, and build a stronger Talensi Constituency. That will help us snatch the seat back, which we have done before. We will come together and bring the seat back to Talensi and ensure that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia wins the presidential slot as President of Ghana.”The Talensi Constituency elections also introduced a new trend in constituency leadership, the new executives.
