The Kassena-Nankana West District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Stephen Aeke Akurugu, has commissioned a newly dedicated livestock market in Paga, 18 years after the district was officially inaugurated on February 29, 2008.

The district was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 1855, after it was carved out of the former larger Kassena-Nankana District in 2007, with its administrative capital at Paga. For years, livestock traders in the district had to commute from Paga to the Kassena-Nankana Municipality to carry out their trading activities.

In addition, revenue that the district generated internally funds that the district should have paid into its own coffers was instead paid to the Kassena-Nankana Municipality.Commissioning the market at the ceremony held at the facility on Saturday morning,16th May , 2026,the DCE, Mr. Akurugu, said the Assembly being responsive to the needs of the people acted quickly on requests for the market.

He explained that several stakeholders, including the Paga Youth Movement, the Paga Cattle Traders Association, and other concerned individuals, engaged him separately to push for the establishment of the livestock market to help improve the district’s ability to generate and retain revenue.
The DCE also responded to requests from the Nania Electoral Area, including calls for a borehole, sheds, fencing, and the extension of electricity to the market.
He stated that such amenities are already considered in the Assembly’s budget appropriations, and assured the community that the needs of the market will be met step by step.

The President of the Paga Youth Movement, Wenawome Aborah, commended the DCE for acting positively on the long-standing demands of the people. He prayed that the gods and blessings of the area will help the market grow and flourish for the benefit of everyone who contributed to making the project a reality.
Mr. Aborah further explained that the matter was discussed long ago on the Paga Youth Movement platform, where members talked about the establishment of an animal market.
He added that the commissioning of the livestock market is a commendable initiative because it will boost the district’s economy, and create livelihoods for people within and beyond the district.
Mr. Aborah also noted that during engagements with the DCE, the absence of a livestock market in Paga was raised, and the DCE indicated that the project had been part of the district’s medium-term budget.
He said, therefore, that once the community pushed for it, there was no reason the project could not be implemented leading to the historic unveiling and opening of the market
