
Angry residents of Sumbrungu blocked the Bolgatanga-Navrongo highway, demanding the immediate installation of speed ramps in response to a tragic increase in fatalities due to the lack of speed control measures on the road.On February 15, 2026, the community experienced a heart-wrenching loss when a man, his pregnant wife, and their daughter were killed in a horrific accident.
The incident involved a speeding bus driven by a mate who attempted an unsafe overtaking maneuver, crashing into the young family, who were on a motorbike traveling to attend a funeral.
Residents voiced their concerns, stating that without proper speed ramps, the risk to pedestrians and motorists remains alarmingly high.

Mr. Albert Adongo, a local resident, lamented the dangers of the Bolgatanga-Navrongo highway, which has become increasingly unsafe due to the absence of speed control measures.

He expressed frustration, stating that the people of Sumbrungu can no longer travel to Bolgatanga, as children struggle to cross the road safely on their way to school.
The saddest part is that a son of the community lost his life, along with his pregnant wife and daughter, due to the lack of speed ramps, pleading with the local authorities to take swift action to prevent further tragedies.

He warned that if no action is taken, the residents would block the road again.Upper East Regional Minister Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri addressed the angry youth, extending condolences to the grieving families. He assured them that the installation of speed ramps would be prioritized.

“We construct roads to facilitate movement and improve the living conditions of our people, not to take lives away,” he remarked.
He emphasized that when roads become a hazard, it is crucial to implement measures to prevent further loss of life.Mr. Akamugri also urged the community’s youth to exercise responsibility when riding motorcycles, reminding them that reckless driving poses significant risks regardless of the presence of speed ramps. “Let us work together to ensure safety on our roads,” he noted .
