The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri, has heeded the distress calls and numerous demands from residents concerning the perilous 500.5-meter stretch of the Winkogo-Tamale highway.

This deadly portion of the road has claimed the life of a young girl on January 5, 2026, when a tipper truck struck her motorbike, which was obscured by dust that severely limited visibility. Tragically, she and her friend fell off the motorbike, and the truck further crushed her, leading to her untimely death.

Mr. Akamugri expressed deep concern over the road’s condition, emphasizing the increasing safety and health concerns for both residents and commuters.
He noted that the plight of the community has attracted the attention of President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Roads and Highways, who are now assessing how they can assist in fixing this hazardous section of the road.
Acknowledging prior commitments under President Mahama’s administration for the Big Push Project, Mr. Akamugri affirmed that they would not allow the residents of Winkogo, as well as other commuters and pedestrians, to continue suffering due to the road’s dangers.
He highlighted the urgent need to address the health risks posed by the dust and the resulting loss of life.To this end, the minister has tasked the contractor to resume work on the site to repair the road segment.
He also extended his condolences to those who have experienced loss and hardship due to the current conditions.
Additionally, Mr. Akamugri appealed to the youth of Winkogo and residents of Ghana who are mobilizing to demonstrate for government attention, assuring them that their concerns have been acknowledged and action is being taken. He urged patience as the government works to resolve the issue.
Moreover, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the flagship Big Push Project, which aims to ensure that the entire Bolgatanga-Winkogo-Tamale Highway is upgraded to a national standard that will benefit all commuters and residents.
