
Daytime robbery has become a troubling norm in the Bolgatanga market in the Upper East Region of Ghana, creating insecurity in the area during the Christmas season and the New Year.

This situation prompted the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri, Regional Police Commander DCOP John Ferguson Dzineku, and Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive Mr. Roland Atanga Ayoo to address the market women.The Bolgatanga market has experienced two daytime robbery incidents.
The first occurred during the first week of Christmas, while the second took place on January 13, 2026. In this latest incident, Mr. Adama Salam, a seller of fertilizers and a vendor of momo who also deals with currency exchange, was attacked by a group of four notorious armed robbers.

They stormed his shop, stealing his phone and approximately 14,000 Ghana cedis. During the attack, stray bullets injured a three-year-old child and a man, both of whom were hospitalized at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.

Speaking to the market women, DCOP John Ferguson Dzineku emphasized that security is a shared responsibility and that teamwork is essential. “You know this market better than we do, which is why we want to collaborate,” he stated. The police are working to establish designated points for installing cameras that will allow them to monitor activities in the market directly from their mobile phones.
DCOP Dzineku announced that drones would be deployed during peak hours to enhance security. “Whenever you see drones in the market area, understand that it’s the police monitoring activities.
This will enable us to review past events for better response and accountability,” he said. He also informed the women that plans are underway to meet with the leadership of the Bolgatanga market women on Monday, January 19, 2026.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Donatus Atanga Akamugri, mentioned that their visit to the Bolgatanga market was to assess the situation and express sympathy to the victims and the market women. He noted that the recent spate of bold daytime robberies by these notorious armed robbers aims to instill fear and disrupt business activities.Despite the current situation, he assured the market women that the authorities are working tirelessly to apprehend these criminals.
“We aim to create a safe environment for you to conduct your business. If residents feel unsafe, fewer people will come to the market,” he said. “We will ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”Mr. Akamugri affirmed that past issues will be addressed decisively to restore safety and security in the area.
