A tipper truck tragically, hit and ran over a woman who fell from her motorbike while traveling on the bumpy Winkogo-Tamale highway toward Bolgatanga.
The incident occurred on January 5, 2026, as she was picking up her college belongings that had fallen during her ride.
The dusty conditions of the road contributed to her fall, leading the driver of the tipper truck to inadvertently run over her, resulting in her untimely death.In response to the tragic scene, the Talensi District Ghana National Fire Service was called to spray water on the hazardous area in an effort to mitigate the intensity of the dust.
This has drawn frustration from many commuters who question why such measures are being implemented instead of hiring a contractor to properly repair the road.
The youth of Winkogo are preparing to protest due to the deteriorating conditions of the bumpy, dusty road, which has raised health concerns for the community. Streetlights in the area, which had been out since 2024, were only partially restored two weeks ago, making nighttime travel hazardous as heavy vehicles pass through the thick dust, obscuring visibility for pedestrians.
In a similar incident on August 29, 2025, a cargo truck transporting timber had overturned on the Bolgatanga-Winkogo-Tamale road, creating heavy traffic congestion. The Ghana Police Service directed traffic to alleviate the situation, while the Upper East Regional Minister engaged the Talensi District Assembly to use DRIP equipment to repair the large potholes that contributed to that accident.
However, little action has been taken since those repairs were patched.
Mrs. Assibi Aduko, a food vendor on the Winkogo-Tamale highway, reported that the two young women on the motorbike were knocked down by the tipper truck, severely injuring one due to the poor visibility caused by the dust. She noted that the situation has slowed her sales, as customers are deterred from stopping to buy food.
In an exclusive interview with the assembly member for the Winkogo electoral area, Mr. Edward Azuah Akolgo, he expressed deep concern over the ongoing issues with the road. “This has been a long-standing problem,” he said. “We have been engaging the appropriate authorities since 2020, but nothing has been resolved, posing serious hazards for the residents of Winkogo.”Mr. Azuah added that the community, pedestrians, and commuters have suffered significantly. “The shops are closed; houses are covered in dust, making it difficult for residents to breathe.
They cannot cook, wash, or even sleep properly due to the dust. Despite our efforts to address these issues, we continue to be ignored.”The recent incident has left the community heartbroken and agitated. “What happened yesterday was catastrophic,” he stated. “A young woman lost her life, and the situation has become unbearable.
Almost all authorities pass through this route, and it is high time the road gets fixed.”He concluded, “The dust poses health risks that we cannot ignore. This is a major highway leading from Bolgatanga to the regional capital, and it is essential that we take action to protect the wellbeing of our community.”
